How I fell in love with Malta?

Updated: Jan 8, 2024

Today is 14th of February. Valentine’s day. So, it's only appropriate to write about how I fell in love with Malta. And how I fell in love in Malta. Four years ago today, my (at the time) flatmate/life-partner/friend-for-a-lifetime Julia and I, departed our flat in San Gwann, where I've been living nearly a year. We headed for an event called "F*uck Valentine’s Day", a party that our favourite bar Casey's, was throwing, to celebrate our single selves and needed a reason to drink on a Thursday. Little did I know, leaving the flat, that the sexy bartender at this very bar, who didn't seem to care to notice my existence until a few days ago, since he started working there about 5 months ago, would use this particular event, to swoop me off my feet with a cheesy pick-up line and steal my heart forever. Anyways, that's pretty much the story of how I fell in love in Malta. But here's the story about how I fell in love with Malta. I originally moved to Malta to do a 6-month (obviously) un-paid internship in marketing, trying to enhance my CV with an official marketing experience, after finishing my Psychology bachelors and realising I have no intention of being a psychologist. The internship was in a company that was run on about 200 un-paid interns, with around 5-10 full-time employees, including the two owners. In addition to the morally questionable exploitation of a EU educational system, the company also scammed the customers by selling them products that would never get delivered, and money not refunded. When busted, the company would just change the operating name and continue the shenanigans. Anyways, I got extremely upset at this whole thing, and decided to look for a job in Malta for the remaining time I was going to stay there. Eventually I found my dream job, rage quit the internship, and in the true spirit of people landing on this rock in the middle of Mediterranean Sea, decided to change my entire life plan, stayed. Even after all my friends have, one after another, left the island. It was after all, the sun and the sea, and an endless supply of social interactions, that I so craved my entire life. What else was there, for a young lost wandering soul. So, after 5 years of moving to Malta, here are some of my best suggestions for visitors and other soul-searchers looking for their space under the sun.
